Impact Hammer and Sensor

An impact hammer for vibration measurements of stringed musical instruments and their parts. The motivation was to create a cost effective impact hammer which can be used by luthiers and musical acousticians on a budget. A Thorlabs PK4DLP1 piezo sensor is mounted in the end of the hammer to sense the strike. This is a relatively inexpensive sensor at $33. Early testing has shown that this hammer is capable of measurements up to ~10 kHz.

A skateboard bearing is used to allow the hammer to swing and it is mountable on a 3/8" Euro mic stand.

A second sensor can be used simultaneously to measure the resulting wave propogation on the othe side of a piece of wood such as a guitar top. The speed of sound in wood can be measured by the recording the time difference between the hammer impact and the initial wavefront on other side of the piece of wood.
